MUIR WOODS WITH KIDS – HOW WE EXPERIENCED CALIFORNIA REDWOODS JUST OUTSIDE SAN FRANCISCO

An unexpectedly peaceful day surrounded by ancient trees, sensory calm, military history, and one very important parking lesson

Beckoning Adventure Beneath the Redwoods

One of the biggest things we wanted from this California road trip was the chance to see the giant redwoods.

Originally, we assumed that experience simply was not realistic for this particular trip. Redwood National Park is much farther north, and with the amount of time we had available, adding that kind of distance into our route just did not feel manageable.

That is what eventually led us to Muir Woods National Monument, located just outside San Francisco in Marin County.

The idea that we could experience ancient coastal redwoods less than an hour from the city honestly felt almost too good to be true, but it ended up becoming one of the most peaceful and unexpectedly meaningful stops of our entire trip.

Here’s how we were beckoning adventure beneath some of California’s oldest trees while balancing kids, accessibility needs, changing plans, and a very memorable parking mishap.

TLDR

  • Muir Woods gave us the incredible redwood experience we wanted without needing to drive all the way to Northern California
  • The park is only about 30 minutes from San Francisco, making it surprisingly easy to include in a shorter trip
  • Parking reservations are required and cell service is extremely limited, so plan ahead carefully
  • The main trail loop is very accessible and worked wonderfully for our mixed mobility family group
  • The Junior Ranger program was one of the highlights of the day for our kids
  • Muir Beach Overlook was an accidental but incredible detour with stunning coastal views and fascinating military history
  • This ended up being one of the most peaceful, sensory-friendly experiences of our entire California road trip

Planning for Muir Woods (Or at Least Thinking We Did)

Before visiting, we honestly thought we had done enough research.

We knew Muir Woods required an entrance fee unless you had a National Parks pass, which we do, and we knew there were shuttle systems available for visitors. Since our family generally prefers the flexibility of having our own vehicle, especially while traveling with a child on the spectrum, we decided driving ourselves would be the easiest option.

What we somehow completely missed was the fact that parking reservations are required separately from park admission.

This is incredibly important to know before your visit because there is essentially no reliable cell service near the monument itself.

The drive into Muir Woods is beautiful but winding at times, with steep sections and narrow roads as you move through the hills outside the city. It was still very manageable and honestly part of the experience for us, especially because it was hard to believe we were this close to San Francisco while surrounded by so much greenery.

Once we arrived at the entrance, the rangers explained the parking reservation system and informed us that payment could not be made directly at the gate.

Normally, this probably would have stressed us out considerably, but thankfully the staff were very kind and helpful. They directed us a few miles up the road to a nearby inn that allowed us to temporarily connect to WiFi so we could make our reservation online.

Unfortunately, by the time we booked, the exact current timeslot was unavailable, which meant we suddenly had extra time to fill before entering the park.

That ended up leading to one of the best accidental detours of the trip.

The Unexpected Surprise – Muir Beach Overlook

Since we suddenly had some time before our reservation window, we continued driving a little farther and stumbled upon Muir Beach Overlook.

This stop was completely unplanned and ended up being absolutely incredible.

The overlook offers sweeping coastal views of the Pacific Ocean, dramatic cliffs, and the surrounding coastline, but what fascinated us most were the historic military observation stations built into the landscape.

These World War II-era structures were once part of San Francisco’s coastal defense system. Soldiers stationed here used massive spotting scopes to monitor ships approaching the coastline and relay information to nearby artillery batteries protecting the Bay Area.

It felt like such an unexpected combination of history and scenery.

The overlook itself is windy, rugged, and incredibly photogenic, with a staircase descending toward the viewpoint that has become iconic online for good reason. We also spotted several beautiful birds while we were there, which made the entire stop feel even more peaceful.

This was one of those moments during the trip where an inconvenience unexpectedly created one of our favorite memories.

Entering the Forest

Once our reservation time arrived, we headed back to Muir Woods National Monument and officially entered the park.

Immediately, the atmosphere changed.

The visitor center staff were incredibly helpful, and before doing anything else we grabbed trail maps and stamped our National Parks passports, which has become one of our favorite traditions whenever we visit National Park sites.

Muir Woods preserves one of the last remaining old-growth coastal redwood forests in the Bay Area, with some trees estimated to be between 500 and 1,000 years old and reaching heights well over 250 feet.

Despite being relatively close to San Francisco, it genuinely feels like entering a completely different world.

The Junior Ranger Program – One of the Best Parts of the Day

We absolutely love the National Park Junior Ranger programs, and Muir Woods had one of our favorite versions we have experienced so far.

The workbooks were filled with genuinely interesting information about the ecosystem, wildlife, conservation, and history of the monument, which kept all of us engaged throughout the visit instead of simply walking the trails quietly and moving on.

One activity in particular became a core memory from the day.

The booklet instructed us to find and smell a specific leaf along the trail, and my youngest immediately turned this into a game by running up to every family member asking them what they thought the leaf smelled like.

It became one of those tiny unexpected moments that somehow perfectly captures the feeling of traveling together as a family.

At the end of the visit, children can take the Junior Ranger pledge and receive a special badge, which always makes the experience feel extra memorable and interactive.

I genuinely cannot recommend these programs enough for families visiting National Parks.

Accessibility, Sensory Relief & Taking Things Slowly

One thing we appreciated immensely about Muir Woods was how accessible it felt overall.

A member of our family had undergone surgery not long before this trip and occasionally needed wheelchair assistance. The park had wheelchairs available, and the main loop trail through the monument was very manageable for our group.

The primary trail system includes accessible boardwalks and paved pathways that allow visitors to experience the towering trees without needing to commit to strenuous hikes.

We spent a couple of hours slowly making our way through the loop at our own pace, stopping frequently to admire the scenery, read signs, complete Junior Ranger activities, and simply absorb the atmosphere around us.

For visitors looking for something more challenging, there are also additional hiking trails branching off the main paths, and we found the park signage extremely easy to follow.

What surprised me most, though, was how calming the forest felt.

The combination of the flowing creek, birdsong, filtered light through the trees, and cool air created this incredibly soothing environment that almost felt like the forest was giving us a mossy hug.

After busy cities, constant driving, crowds, and overstimulation, this ended up being one of the best sensory-reset moments of the entire trip.

The Trees, The Creek & Why the Main Loop Is Enough for Most Families

One thing I appreciated about Muir Woods is that you do not necessarily need to commit to an intense hike in order to experience something truly special.

The main loop trail honestly gives visitors access to a huge amount of the park’s beauty.

There are wooden bridges crossing the creek, towering redwoods in every direction, and enough interpretive signage and educational information throughout the trail to keep the experience engaging the entire time.

The trees themselves are difficult to describe properly until you are standing beneath them. They somehow feel both massive and graceful at the same time.

Even though the monument covers over 500 acres, the accessible central areas never felt overwhelming or difficult to navigate for our family.

A Few Things We Learned Before Visiting

If you are planning a visit to Muir Woods, the biggest piece of advice I can give is this: make your parking reservation ahead of time and screenshot or download everything before arriving.

Cell service is extremely unreliable near the monument, and while the rangers were incredibly kind and helpful to us, we definitely learned this lesson the hard way.

Comfortable walking or hiking shoes are also absolutely worth bringing, especially because weather conditions can shift quickly depending on fog, coastal winds, and temperature changes throughout the day.

We highly recommend bringing:

  • reusable water bottles
  • layers for changing weather
  • snacks if you plan to stay awhile
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • downloaded maps or reservation confirmations
  • And check out my road trip essentials!

For us, Muir Woods worked perfectly as part of a larger San Francisco exploration day because the location is so close to the city. We still managed to explore several additional landmarks afterward, which honestly surprised us considering how immersive this experience felt.

If you are planning a broader Bay Area itinerary, this stop is absolutely doable even during a shorter trip.

John Muir: An Unexpected Thread Throughout Our Trip

One interesting thing we did not expect while planning this road trip was how often the name John Muir would continue appearing throughout the rest of our journey.

Muir Woods was our first major “big tree” stop of the trip, but later we encountered more references to John Muir at Calaveras Big Trees State Park and again throughout Yosemite National Park.

Known as the “Father of the National Parks,” John Muir was a writer, environmentalist, and conservation advocate whose work helped shape the preservation of some of America’s most iconic landscapes, including Yosemite.

By the end of the trip, it almost felt like his philosophy of protecting wilderness had quietly followed us across California.

One of the Most Peaceful Places We Visited in California

Muir Woods ended up becoming so much more than simply “the place where we saw redwoods.”

It became one of the calmest, most grounding parts of our trip.

Between the towering ancient trees, the quiet trails, the creek winding through the forest, the educational moments with the Junior Ranger program, and the unexpected coastal detour at Muir Beach Overlook, this day somehow managed to feel both adventurous and deeply peaceful at the same time.

Most importantly, it reminded us that some of the most meaningful travel experiences do not require perfect planning. Sometimes they happen because plans change, reservations go wrong, and you accidentally discover something wonderful along the way. For more about our time in San Fransisco as a whole read along here.

And that’s how we continued to escape the ordinary beneath some of California’s oldest and most awe-inspiring trees.

Goodbye, 2025 🤍 This year was a bit of a rollerco Goodbye, 2025 🤍

This year was a bit of a rollercoaster. In these clips you will see smiles, highlights, and moments spent with people I love deeply. Many of you were right there with me through so much of it, and I am truly grateful I got to share those memories with you.

What you may not have seen is that behind the scenes, my life was falling apart in a lot of ways. This was one of the hardest years I have faced in recent memory. There was loss and heartbreak. Financial stress. A lot of self doubt paired with unexpected self discovery. And somehow, through it all, there was still love holding everything together, stitching the pieces back into place.

I am proud of myself for surviving this year. For showing up when it was hard. For continuing to create, to love, to fight for the things that matter to me even when I felt exhausted and unsure.

As I look ahead to 2026, I feel hopeful. I can finally see the beginnings of things I worked so hard for this past year starting to blossom. I am ready for growth, for joy, and for making a bigger splash than ever before. I hope you will be here for that next chapter too.

And if this year was heavy for you as well, congratulations on surviving. When the clock strikes midnight tonight, I hope our slates are wiped clean and refilled with possibility, peace, and unexpected blessings.

Thank you for the memories. Goodbye, 2025 🤍

A friend and I spent the evening at the Broken Spe A friend and I spent the evening at the Broken Spell Lounge at the Disneyland Hotel, and it truly felt like stepping into a different world. This is not really a space to bring kids. It’s moody, quiet, and built for conversation and ambiance.

Inspired by Sleeping Beauty, the lounge feels cozy and romantic, perfect for a pre dinner stop or a nightcap. The food was phenomenal and meant for sharing. We ordered the Parmesan truffle fries with fresh herbs and they were indulgent in the best way.

For drinks, I had the hot chocolate cocktail with dark rum and Drambuie. It was rich, cozy, and beautifully balanced. My friend ordered the chocolate marshmallow old fashioned, complete with wood smoke and mini marshmallows, which felt like a full experience on its own.

This isn’t an everyday stop, but for the right occasion, it really hits the spot. It feels special, intentional, and unlike anything else on property. A one of a kind experience that’s perfect for slowing down and savoring the moment.

I thought these giant snowflake ears would be cute I thought these giant snowflake ears would be cute with Snoap, but they’re actually a super easy DIY ❄️✨

How I made them:
• Grab two floral snowflake inserts. I found mine on clearance after winter and saved them because they were Mickey ear sized
• Pick an inexpensive plush or upholstered headband
• Bend the snowflake wires to match the curve of the headband
• Use an existing pair of ears to figure out the right spacing
• Make two small holes and push the wires into the headband along the curve. It was very stable, so I left it as is
• Add a bow between the snowflakes. I chose silver ribbon and hot glued it in place

Simple, affordable, and perfect for the holidays. Sometimes the best Disney accessories are the ones you make yourself and these were under $5! ❄️🎄

This holiday tote turned into one of my favorite m This holiday tote turned into one of my favorite mom hacks this season 🎄👜

The tote was $29 with additional purchases, so I loaded up on park candy I already buy and grabbed it. It’s roomy, has a zip closure, and even fully packed it fit into a small locker, which is $7 instead of the $10 large one.

I also buy bundles of park lollipops. A pack of 5 is just over $7, about the price of one usual treat. I stockpile them at home and bring a couple each visit.

Holiday weather is unpredictable. Warm days, freezing nights. I packed jackets, beanies, gloves, and scarves for our family of four into this tote, stored it during the day, then grabbed it at night. Warm kids, happy kids, and an affordable sweet treat to end the day.

Why this works so well:
• Mom math saved money on the tote, snacks, lockers, and impulse sweatshirt purchases
• Everyone had the right layers at the right time, which helps avoid meltdowns
• Dad didn’t have to carry everything
• Kids felt comfortable and cared for
• Mom got a cute tote

Simple, practical, and honestly one of those small things that makes a full park day so much easier ✨

No park ticket. No reservation. Still pure holiday No park ticket. No reservation. Still pure holiday magic ✨❄️

During the holidays, Downtown Disney transforms with Snoap, Disney’s signature soap-based “snow” that falls nightly and creates a dreamy winter wonderland without ever melting. You can usually find it near the LIVE! Stage and Town Center, drifting through the air every 30 to 45 minutes in the evenings.

It’s non-toxic, bubbly, and absolutely enchanting whether you’re shopping, grabbing dinner, or enjoying some live entertainment while it “snows.”

If you’re blocked out of the parks or just visiting Downtown Disney, this is such a special way to experience Disney holiday magic without needing a ticket 🎄✨

Fantasyland Theatre during the holidays feels like Fantasyland Theatre during the holidays feels like a little pause button. 🎄

During Christmas, this space transforms into Holiday Fun with Santa & Friends; a cozy, daytime winter wonderland and an easy sensory break from the rest of the park. You’ll find holiday crafts, carol sing-alongs, story time, live music, and chances to meet characters like Chip & Dale in their holiday best, plus plenty of places to sit and slow down.

I’ll always miss the Lion King show that once lived here, but I really love how Disneyland has continued to use this theater since then. Especially in ways that feel calm, classic, and family-first.

I didn’t film everything on purpose (partly to respect other guests, partly because some magic is better discovered in person 😉), but if you’re looking for a quieter holiday moment, unique photos, and a chance to reset, this is such a lovely stop.

Tip: you can take the Disneyland Railroad and hop off at the Toontown station, the theater is just across the way. 🚂✨

Mid-November through early January, and absolutely worth wandering into.

Even though the Christmas Carol Feast is definitel Even though the Christmas Carol Feast is definitely a splurge, I brought back one of my favorite affordable souvenir hacks… and it turned into something so special.

I brought the Mickey’s Christmas Carol storybook from Amazon (under $10!) and had every character sign; Scrooge, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Clarabelle in their Christmas Carol costumes. The cast members and character attendants were incredible too, the service here is honestly some of the best at Disneyland.

It took about two hours to meet everyone, and I’d absolutely do it again. Just make sure to book reservations early because this experience fills up fast.

A simple $10 storybook + exceptional service + rare character meet-and-greets = a keepsake I’ll treasure for years. 🎄✨
